Research Management

Carlos Cid

Director, Simula UiB and QCNA

Carlos is the director of Simula UiB. Additionally, he is the founding director of the Centre for Quantum Communication Networks and Applications (QCNA), an adjunct professor at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology.

Carlos holds a PhD in Mathematics and has extensive experience in cyber security and cryptography. After nearly 20 years at Royal Holloway, where he became a full professor, he is now the director of Simula UiB. Additionally, he is the founding director of the Centre for Quantum Communication Networks and Applications (QCNA), an adjunct professor at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology, and chair of Standards Norway’s quantum technology committee.

His research interests traditionally focus on applying algebraic techniques to symmetric and public-key cryptanalysis. Recently, his work has expanded into quantum and post-quantum cryptography, including secure quantum communication and computation. He also explores the intersection of economics and cyber security, using game-theoretic methods to analyze security problems. In addition, Carlos co-designed Classic McEliece, a post-quantum key encapsulation mechanism, which was a NIST fourth-round finalist and standardized by ISO in June 2026.

Eirik Rosnes

Head of the Information Theory Department

Eirik´s research interests are in the wide areas of quantum information science, coding and communication theory, and statistical learning theory, and include classical error-control coding, quantum error-correction, information-theoretic privacy and security, and distributed computing and learning.

Eirik Rosnes received the Dr. Scient. degree in informatics from the University of Bergen (UiB) in 2003. From 2003 to 2011 he was with UiB as a Post-Doc/Researcher, and then as a Senior Engineer with Ceragon Networks from 2011 to 2013, before joining Simula in 2013. Currently, he is also an Adjunct Professor in quantum technologies at UiB and the Research and Education Lead of QCNA.

His research interests are in the wide areas of quantum information science, coding and communication theory, and statistical learning theory, and include classical error-control coding, quantum error-correction, information-theoretic privacy and security, and distributed computing and learning. Dr. Rosnes has served as Area Editor for the AEU International Journal of Electronics and Communications, Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Communications, and Guest Editor of several special issues of the journals Entropy/Information.

Martijn Stam

Head of the Cryptography Department

Martijn’s core research spans a wide breadth of the field, with a focus on public-key and post-quantum cryptography, symmetric cryptography and modes-of-operation, real-world cryptography, and side-channel analysis.

Martijn Stam is a chief research scientist at Simula UiB with extensive international experience in cryptographic research. He earned his Master’s and PhD from TU Eindhoven in 2003 and has spent his career advancing the field across several leading European institutions, holding postdoctoral and faculty positions at the University of Bristol, EPFL, and Royal Holloway, University of London, before joining Simula UiB in 2019.

Martijn’s core research spans a wide breadth of the field, with a focus on public-key and post-quantum cryptography, symmetric cryptography and modes-of-operation, real-world cryptography, and side-channel analysis. Beyond his research, he is committed to academic mentorship, having co-supervised numerous PhD candidates during his nearly decade-long tenure as an associate professor at the University of Bristol.

Hsuan-Yin Lin

Senior Research Scientist, Information Theory Department

Hsuan-Yin Lin current research focuses on quantum error correction, privacy-preserving learning, and finite-blocklength information theory, with particular interests in the fundamental limits of communication and learning, efficient coding and decoding methods, and the interplay between quantum information and modern machine learning.

Hsuan-Yin Lin received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan. His research aims to develop the information-theoretic foundations of trustworthy quantum and distributed learning systems, spanning information theory, quantum information, coding theory, and differential privacy.

His current research focuses on quantum error correction, privacy-preserving learning, and finite-blocklength information theory, with particular interests in the fundamental limits of communication and learning, efficient coding and decoding methods, and the interplay between quantum information and modern machine learning. His work seeks to bridge rigorous information-theoretic foundations with practical communication and computing systems. He has been actively involved in national and international research projects and collaborations across Europe, Asia, and industry. He serves as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Communications and was the General Chair of the 2026 IEEE European School of Information Theory (ESIT).

Håvard Raddum

Chief Research Scientist, Cryptography Department

Håvard’s core research focuses on the design and cryptanalysis of symmetric ciphers, as well as the practical application of privacy-preserving technologies like Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE).

Håvard Raddum is a senior cryptography researcher with over two decades of expertise in securing digital systems. He earned his PhD in Cryptography from the University of Bergen (UiB) in 2005 and has spent the majority of his career advancing the field—first as a researcher at UiB, and later joining Simula UiB at its inception.

Håvard’s core research focuses on the design and cryptanalysis of symmetric ciphers, as well as the practical application of privacy-preserving technologies like Fully Homomorphic Encryption (FHE). Beyond his research, he is deeply committed to academic mentorship, having guided numerous Master’s and PhD candidates to the successful completion of their degrees. He also regularly contributes to the global cryptography community through service on various conference program committees.
